On the weekend of 28 and 29 July 2018, Legendary Wargames welcomed back the Katritzky family for their fourth year in a row.
This year saw us putting on a short two battle ACW battle campaign centred around the town of Gainesville in Florida for Rupert and his son Eric. This was of particular interest to them as they have family in that town and were already aware of the engagements that took place there. We used our own inhouse ACW rules which we hope to publish some time in the near future.
For Sissi we had another adventure in which she played Belle O’Hara, the daughter of Colonel O’Hara. She needed to lift a curse on her father, rally militias in the area to the Confederate cause, and track down and capture or kill four Union sympathisers and spies who were stealing gold, horses and artillery.
Below are some pictures of the family and the games.
The family review the skirmish on Day 1 which was run as a one figure to one actual soldier game. The original skirmish was approximately 160 Confederates and 250 Union and was won by the Rebels. This one ended up with the Union forces taking control of the town.
Sissi gives a thumbs up for a first victory having tracked down the first of the Union spies and brought them to justice. We used DMH Wild West rules for these side adventure games.
A close up of the Union attack down main street and near the Railway station, just before they ousted the Confederates from the town.
The action at the end of the second day and the second battle of Gainesville. This is the Confederate right. The Union forces still hold the town but the Rebels had been closing in before the game ended.
Above, the Rebel left flank. Here the Union forces were crumbling and had we had time, they would have pressed in to the Union right by the Station and town.
The family together after the end of the games. Sissi had completed all her adventures and in the process had contributed to aiding Eric’s forces in both quality and quantity. Rupert and Eric had fought a very competitive battle and it was all still to play for at the close.
As usual, we thoroughly enjoyed hosting the Katritzky’s. They provide us with a different kind of game hosting experience, and we look forward to seeing them back in 2019, hopefully for a Border Reivers campaign. We received the following note from Rupert after the weekend.
“Just a short note to thank you for the game, which we all enjoyed. Thank you in particular to your excellent support of Sissi. She said it was the best time she had come ever. For Eric a wonderful introduction to the ACW, and for me a much better understanding of the evolution of tactics from Napoleonics. Richard’s mastery of the rules and patience with Eric and myself made this another great event for both of us as well!!! ” – Rupert Katritzky
Finally, a thank you once again to Chris Flowers for the use of his games room and figures. We hope that 2019 will see the opening of our Wargames Lodge and some grander games. Please get in touch if you fancy coming along, and please keep an eye on the web page for news and events.
