The River columns square took advantage of the withdrawing Mahdists by advancing towards the Wadi.
The Egyptian Gendarmes headed forward towards the river. Acting on information gained from the column they suspected the boats could contain stolen items.
Unfortunately their commander, Captain Mustapha Lead, fell unwell to a the sudden heatwave.
This halted their progress for the day!
On the river, whilst the square was moving forward, came under fire from Mahdists on the river!
After a brief firefight the Mahdist boats fled!
The Desert column moved slowly but surely down the river, the Mahdists realising that they had missed there chance!
So ended Day 5.
The Desert Column camped knowing in the morning they move to safety.
